Jonathan Gould, of Virginia - Comptroller of the Currency
Jonathan Gould was nominated by President Trump in February to serve as Comptroller of the Currency - a supervisory position that oversees and regulates national banks and federal savings associations to ensure they operate safely, efficiently, and fairly. He was confirmed by a yea-and-nay vote of 50 YEAS to 45 NAYS on July 10, 2025 [1].
Gould attended Princeton for undergrad and received his J.D. from Washington and Lee University in 2001 [3]. Since then, he has worked extensively around and for financial institutions, such as Promontory Financial Group, BlackRock, and BitFury [3]. He also served with the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs as counsel from 2005-2008, and as chief counsel starting in 2018; also in 2018, “he was appointed the senior deputy comptroller and the chief counsel in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC),” a role he held until June 2021 [2].
As head of the OCCC, Gould will now shape how large financial institutions are monitored in the United States. He will lead a staff of approximately 2,000 employees, directing the agency’s efforts in enforcing banking laws, conducting bank examinations, and managing risk frameworks. He’ll also wield authority over bank-chartering decisions, including fintech and crypto-focused institutions.
